Myers, W. D. (1999). Monster. NY:
Harper. Steve Harmon is the main character here. He is on trial for murder and
robbery along with three others. Two pled guilty and took a bargain, King and
Harmon pled innocent and both stand trial.
Harmon is 16 in this book. The only eyewitness said she only saw two,
not four. Even the two who pled guilty only said he was a lookout. His film
teacher testifies to his good moral character even. He is found innocent but
one wonders, as does Harmon when he is refused a victory hug at the end. I love
Myers and there is something genius in how he constructed this book. The style
is as if Harmon is creating a screenplay and the also includes bits from his
diary to portray the unfolding’s of the trial. This will really pull kids into
the discussion of what we believe is truth as the truth gets twisted on trial.
This is a great book for high school students!
